چکیده

In the numerical simulation of blood ow problems it might happen that the only available physical boundary conditions prescribe the ow rate incoming=outgoing the vascular district at hand. In order to have a well-posed Navier–Stokes (NS) problem, these conditions need to be completed. In the bioengineering community, this problem is usually faced by choosing a priori a velocity pro le on the in ow=out ow sections, that should t the assigned ow rates. This approach strongly in uences the accuracy of the numerical solutions. A less perturbative strategy is based on the so-called ‘donothing’ approach, advocated in Heywood et al. (Int. J. Num. Meth. Fluids 1996; 22:325–352). An equivalent approach, however, easier from the numerical discretization viewpoint, has been proposed in Formaggia et al. (SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 2002; 40(1):376–401). It is based on an augmented formulation of the problem, in which the conditions on the ow rates are prescribed in a weak sense by means of Lagrangian multipliers. In this paper we extend this analysis to the unsteady augmented NS problem, proving a well-posedness result. Moreover, we present some numerical methods for solving the augmented problem, based on a splitting of the computation of velocity and pressure on one side and the Lagrangian multiplier on the other one. In this way, we show how it is possible to solve the augmented problem resorting to available NS solvers. Copyright ? 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Mathematical Modeling of Flow in a Granular Permeable Bed Channel

In this research, a two-dimensional mathematical model using  turbulence model was developed in a rectangular channel with granular permeable bed. Finite volume method was used for numerical solution of governing equations. The equations considered are discretized using Hybrid difference scheme while applying SIMPLE algorithm to correct velocity components in the continuity equation. In the dev...

A New Approach to Numerical Solution of Defective Boundary Value Problems in Incompressible Fluid Dynamics

We consider the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations where on a part of the boundary flow rate and mean pressure boundary conditions are prescribed. There are basically two strategies for solving these defective boundary problems: the variational approach (see J. Heywood, R. Rannacher, S. Turek, Int J Num Meth Fluids 22 (1996), pp. 325-352) and the augmented formulation (see L. Formaggia, J. ...

Boundary conditions of patient-specific fluid dynamics modelling of cavopulmonary connections: possible adaptation of pulmonary resistances results in a critical issue for a virtual surgical planning.

Cavopulmonary connections are surgical procedures used to treat a variety of complex congenital cardiac defects. Virtual pre-operative planning based on in silico patient-specific modelling might become a powerful tool in the surgical decision-making process. For this purpose, three-dimensional models can be easily developed from medical imaging data to investigate individual haemodynamics. How...

Study of Parameters Affecting Separation Bubble Size in High Speed Flows using k-ω Turbulence Model

Shock waves generated at different parts of vehicle interact with the boundary layer over the surface at high Mach flows. The adverse pressure gradient across strong shock wave causes the flow to separate and peak loads are generated at separation and reattachment points. The size of separation bubble in the shock boundary layer interaction flows depends on various parameters. Reynolds-averaged...

Large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubes submerged in an emulated atmospheric boundary-layer

Turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubic obstacles has been numerically investigated using large-eddy simulation. The simulations have been performed using high-performance computations with local cluster systems. The array of cubes are fully submerged in a simulated deep rough-wall atmospheric boundary-layer with high turbulence intensity characteristics of environmental turbulent fl...
